In the pilot episode of a new MSDN series, Microsoft and Transpara redesigned the user experience in “Visual KPI” software to provide a more streamlined interface which is both easier to use as well as being visually appealing. The challenge here was how to work within the Transpara customer requirements of being a web based interface designed to be viewed on a variety of mobile devices.

Getting vital information to mobile workers is no easy task, but the job is a whole lot easier when all the technology fits together. That was behind the decision of KeySpan Corp., the largest electric generator in New York State, to use the latest version of Transpara Corp.'s Visual KPI to distribute performance metrics from generators, turbines and other equipment to engineers via advanced cellular phones. "It's about as simple as you can get," Ragone said. "It took us longer to get the purchasing in place than to launch the actual project." The return on investment was obvious when you consider that taking a turbine offline for repair could cost KeySpan hundreds of thousands of dollars a day, Ragone said. "This is insurance, essentially," he said of Visual KPI.
