Using Specialized Data Sources

It is common that custodians of specialized data sources do not allow direct access to ERPs or vertical industry applications for fear of affecting system performance, accidentally changing the data, or due to the cost of building specialized reports.

Rather than deal with the “politics” of the data system, it may be easier to gain READ access and then

  • Connect to the application’s database directly (ODBC, OLAP, JSON, or XML)
  • Connect to reports
  • Connect to or create staged tables or views. This can be used in a complex SQL environment to get the data across many tables and to avoid building complex queries. You may be able to get a data extract from data tables/cubes that the business owner does not want to risk having changed.
